CHAPTER 19: Stock Ticker and Alarms

Overview

The Portfolio Manager can create a stock price ticker to give you a one-glance summary of the performance of all the securities in a portfolio. In addition, you can be notified when a security releases a Company Announcement, when a security’s price moves above or below a certain price or when it moves more than a certain amount.

Creating a Ticker

You can only create a Ticker from a WatchList or Share Holding you have already created. For more information about creating and editing a WatchList or Share Holding, see the “Portfolio Basics” and “Portfolio Editing”, please see the chapter on the Portfolio Manager.

When your portfolio is set up with all the symbols you wish to watch, you can create a ticker as follows:

Step 1: Open the Portfolio Manager by going to the Actions menu, choosing Prices and then Portfolio:

Step 2: In the Portfolio List, select the name of the portfolio you wish to view as a ticker:

Step 3: In the Display list, select “Ticker”:

Step 4: Click the “View” button.

Step 5: A new Ticker window will appear containing the ticker for that portfolio:

Ticker display

The ticker display contains several important elements:

Security Tiles each display a the details of a single security:

You can click on each tile to display the Security Details for that security.

Each tile contains the security code, the absolute price movement since market open in dollars, and the current price. Securities whose price has moved up since market open are drawn in green, securities whose price has moved down since market open are drawn in red, and securities which have not moved are drawn in white.

When the security’s current price changes, the background of the tile will glow briefly. If the new price is higher than the old, it will glow green.

If the new price is lower than the old, it will glow red.

If the security has issued a company announcement since the ticker window was opened, an announcement icon will appear in the lower-left of the tile. Clicking on this icon will open the announcement in a new window.

If you have added an alarm for a security and the alarm has been triggered, an alarm bell icon will appear in the lower-left of the tile. Clicking on this icon will open the “Triggered Alarms” list in the Alarms Editor window.

Mute News Alerts enables you to turn off news alerts if you find them distracting.

Normally, the ticker will chime whenever any security in the portfolio issues a company announcement. However, if you find the news alerts too loud or otherwise undesirable, you can stop them by ticking the box.

Alarms Button opens the Alarms Editor:

For more details, see “Setting Alarms” below.

Close Button should close the Ticker window, but is broken:

Setting Alarms

When you have created a ticker from a portfolio (see “Creating a Ticker”, above), you can add alarms that notify you when a security’s price rises or falls, or moves by a certain amount.

To set up alarms, click on the “Alarms” button at the bottom of the ticker to open the Alarm Editor window:

To add an alarm, enter the settings in the “Edit Alarm” pane on the left, then click the “Add” button.

To remove an alarm, select the alarm in the list labelled “Selected Alarms”, then click “Remove”.

To edit an alarm, select the alarm in the list labelled “Selected Alarms”, to copy the settings across to the “Edit Alarm” pane. Edit the alarm’s settings as you wish, then click the “Replace” button to copy them back to the “Selected Alarms” list.

When an alarm is triggered, the ticker tile gets an alarm bell icon and the alarm is removed from the “Selected Alarms” list and added to the “Triggered Alarms” list. To see the Triggered Alarms list, click the “Triggered Alarms” button at the top of the Alarms Editor window:

The “Triggered Alarms” list contains an entry for every alarm that has been triggered.

To re-enable an alarm so that it can be triggered again, click on the alarm in the list and then click the “Re-arm alarm”. It will be moved back to the “Selected Alarms” list in the Alarm Settings section of the Alarms Editor.

To remove an alarm entirely, click on the alarm in the list and then click the “Remove” button.

To remove all triggered alarms, click on the “Empty Log” button.

To return to the Alarm Settings page, click the “Alarm Settings” button at the top of the Alarms Editor window.
